The Costa del Sol is quenching its thirst with a significant expansion of its desalination capacity. The Marbella desalination plant has doubled its water treatment capacity, thanks to the completion of the first phase of a major project.

The Junta de Andalucía’s spokesperson for water, Ramón Fernández-Pacheco, made the announcement during a visit to the facility on September 23rd. Accompanying him were the president of the Mancomunidad association of town halls on the western Costa del Sol, Manuel Cardeña, the CEO of Acosol, Matilde Mancha, the mayor of Marbella, Ángeles Muñoz, and other local officials.

The project, which involved an investment of 4.3 million euros, has increased the plant’s production capacity from six cubic hectometres (hm3) to 12 hm3 per day. This expansion is a crucial step in addressing the region’s water needs, especially in the face of ongoing drought conditions.

The second phase of the project is already underway, with a budget of 2.9 million euros. This phase will further boost the plant’s capacity to 20 hm3 by the first quarter of 2025.

Fernández-Pacheco emphasized the significance of this expansion. “The production that the Marbella desalination plant will achieve represents between 15 and 20 percent of the Costa del Sol’s needs, which means that not only will it be able to supply the area but, if necessary and if there is a surplus, resources could be transferred to Malaga city, the Campo de Gibraltar, and even the Axarquía.”

Mayor Ángeles Muñoz expressed her relief and satisfaction with the project. “Our main industry would have no reason to exist without such a necessary resource as water, a pillar that sustains our tourist activity and our economic engine,” she said. She also highlighted the plant’s modern technology and improved water quality.

The drought continues to be a pressing concern in the Malaga province. The Andalusian government has launched a roadmap to mitigate the effects of the lack of rainfall and ensure a reliable water supply. In addition to the Marbella desalination plant, the government plans to invest over 37 million euros to extend and improve the Río Verde drinking water treatment plant (ETAP) in Marbella.

The Río Verde ETAP, established in 1972, requires significant upgrades to meet current standards. The project will double the plant’s treatment capacity, ensuring a more reliable and high-quality water supply for the region.
