The Costa del Sol town of San Pedro Alcántara is embarking on a significant reforestation project. With plans to plant 120 new trees throughout the town, the initiative aims to enhance the local environment, improve air quality, and create a more visually appealing urban landscape.
Deputy Mayor Javier García emphasized the importance of diversity in the tree species selection. By carefully considering the suitability of each species to its specific location, the town aims to ensure the long-term health and sustainability of the newly planted trees.
The reforestation project involves a two-pronged approach. Firstly, diseased or dangerous trees will be removed to make way for the new plantings. Secondly, the 120 new trees will be strategically placed throughout San Pedro Alcántara’s neighborhoods and streets, taking into account factors such as aesthetics and suitability.
García highlighted the numerous benefits that trees bring to a community. Trees help to improve air quality, reduce noise pollution, and provide shade during hot summer months. They also contribute to a more pleasant and inviting urban environment, enhancing the overall quality of life for residents and visitors alike.
To ensure the success of the reforestation project, a thorough viability study is conducted for each planting location. This involves assessing the environmental conditions, soil quality, and other factors that may influence the trees’ growth and survival. By selecting the most suitable species for each site, the town aims to maximize the chances of successful establishment and long-term health.
The initial phase of the project has already begun, with approximately thirty trees being planted in several areas of San Pedro Alcántara. These include Calles San Javier and Vega del Mar, as well as the landscaped area at the entrance to the Al-Ándalus school. The species planted in these locations include Celtius australis, Cercis siliquastrum, and Cupressus sempervirens.
The reforestation efforts will continue in various other neighborhoods and streets throughout the town, including Avenidas Oriental, Marqués del Duero, del Mediterráneo, Príncipe de Asturias, Luis Braille, Pablo Ruiz Picasso, la Constitución, the boulevard, Plazas Santa Gema and de la Iglesia, El Arquillo park, and many more.
San Pedro Alcántara’s reforestation project is a testament to the town’s commitment to environmental sustainability and enhancing the quality of life for its residents. By carefully selecting and planting diverse tree species, the town is creating a greener and more vibrant urban landscape for generations to come.
